Delivered the day after the Capitol riot, this measured video message is, in constitutional terms, the single most Article-XVII-aligned statement in the record — because it does the one thing the Permanence of the Constitutional Order most requires: it accepts the certified outcome and commits to the peaceful transfer of power. Congress has certified the results, a new administration will be inaugurated on January 20, and my focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly, and seamless transition of power. It pairs that with an unqualified condemnation of the riot — outraged by the violence, lawlessness, and mayhem; the rioters have defiled the seat of American democracy; you do not represent our country — and with accountability under law: to those who broke the law, you will pay, in a nation of law and order.
